Pianos for Rent
If you would like to rent a piano, almost any type of piano you want is available. Pianos are available for short term rentals for weddings, concerts, and parties or long term on a monthly basis.
“I'm not sure my kids will like piano lessons, so I want to invest as little as possible.”
We hear this from many parents with beginner piano students and it is a genuine concern. As well, the best piano teachers recommend that the greatest opportunity for success will be when the student has a good quality acoustic piano to practice on.
Having said that, I have a granddaughter who completed her grade 8 piano exam - and she learned on a digital piano. Now notice - I said digital piano - not a keyboard.
Plumb Pianos offers both brand new acoustic and digital pianos as well as good used pianos for rent. Our most popular models are available in both upright and grand pianos.
Keyboards are a Different Animal
Let's talk a bit about keyboards. There is no doubt that a small keyboard hinders progress if a child is trying to learn piano. They are not the same thing as a piano. Yes - they both have keys that look like a piano, but there the similarity ends. If a child is trying to learn to play the piano on a keyboard, it may stop lessons before they even get going. The sound is different, the touch is extremely different. It's like trying to learn to play golf with a hockey stick or baseball bat.
So, if you take piano lessons you need a good quality piano to practice on, whether that be an acoustic or digital and a piano rental may be the answer.
However, don't let me discourage you from taking lessons on a small piano keyboard. It's a cheap way to get started - just realize that in 3 months they won't have enough keys and you will need to upgrade.

What does it cost to rent?
You can rent a piano starting at just $50 per month for an acoustic (real piano), or a digital piano rental for only $30 per month, and a new baby grand for as little as $205 per month. And even the basic digital we rent has a full set of 88 keys and feels like a real piano. We do not rent keyboards with only 76 notes that have a half-baked touch.Whenever the time is right for purchase you may take 8 months of payments and apply it to the purchase of any rental piano we have in stock as well the money you paid for delivery of the piano at the time of rental, or you can purchase the piano on our rent to own program of 18 months. Or you can rent for as long as you wish with no obligation to buy. We have rented pianos to many visitors from Japan, China, South Korea, France, Germany, - in fact from all over Europe and Asia that wanted a piano from anywhere from 1 month to a couple of years. With this program, every family can have a quality piano for their student to play and enjoy!
As you can see from the pictures on this page Plumb Pianos has a variety of new and used pianos for rent available in different piano makes, sizes and colours to suit your style and space requirements. Any piano for rental has a full-sized keyboard and comes with a bench.
Before You Buy A Keyboard - Read This
From years of experience with pianos and music lessons we have learned that the purchase of a keyboard may not be a smart move. Believe me, it is better to rent than waste your money on a keyboard - unless you intend on learning to play a keyboard. There are several reasons.
1. Many keyboards have keys that are the too small and not the normal piano key size and students learn improper spatial co-ordination. When they outgrow a keyboard with small keys they have to relearn this very important part of playing a piano or keyboard with full size keys.
2. Most keyboards are touch sensitive (the harder you hit the key the louder they sound), but they do not feel like a real piano. We find that when students finally get either an electric or acoustic piano, where the touch is weighted like a real piano, they progress much faster in their lessons. The reason for this is that they are practicing on one instrument (a keyboard) and the teacher is teaching on a totally different animal (an acoustic piano).
3. Most keyboards only have 61 notes (some even worse) and students quickly run out of keys, usually within the first 3 months. We had a student that was still playing on a keyboard after more than 3 years. She was a grade A student in school, but struggled in her piano lessons. It certainly wasn't because she couldn't do it. She simply had the wrong tools for the job. Notwithstanding our suggestions her parents never seemed to realize that while you can cut down a tree with a steak knife - a chain saw would work a lot better. Most kids get discouraged and quit long before the tree comes down.
So if you're going to use a keyboard, be aware that progress will be slowed on learning the piano. If cost is a factor either rent a real piano or take lessons intended for a keyboard, and learn what a keyboard can really do.
