Beginning Band Program

Beginning Band classes are for students with little or no previous musical training between the ages of 9 - 13 to learn instrumental music in a fun environment.

Instruments Offered:
Brass: Trumpet, Trombone & Euphonium
Woodwind: Flute, Clarinet, & Saxophone

This program starts this fall in 2008. Classes will meet for one hour each week or one hour two days per week in the early evening.

Students will learn the fundamentals of music theory and basics of instrumental performance. By the end of the class students will be able to read music including notes, rhythms, dynamics, and articulation and perform them on a band instrument.

Space is Limited for Each Instrument

The number of openings for each instrument is limited, so let us know as soon as possible to reserve a space. It might be a good idea to reserve before the end of June, 2008.

First Semester Starts the Week of September 8 - Ends the Week of January 23

Second Semester Starts the Week of January 26 - Ends the Week of June 5.

Two Options

Option One

Option One will provide 18 hours of class instruction with classes once per week for 18 weeks.

Tuition for option one is $200.00 per semester payable in four payments each semester of $50.00 each. This is approximately $11 per hour.

Option Two

Option Two will provide 36 hours of class instruction with classes twice per week for 18 weeks.

Tuition for this option is $400.00 per semester payable in four payments each semester of $100.00 each. Again, this works out to about $11 per hour.

Class Requirements

Students are required to provide their own instrument. However, before you buy or rent something we will have a registration night where we will determine which instrument each child will learn.

Some children simply can't play a trombone - particularly if you're short. Some can't play trumpet because their teeth and jaw aren't built for it.

As well, for a band to sound good, there must be a balance in the number of instruments. For instance, we can't have 20 trumpets and 1 clarinet.

When I joined the London Police Boys Band at age 9, I went wanting to play the trumpet. My first rehearsal was on soprano saxophone. They simply had too many sign up before me on trumpet. Do I regret that? Nope - I've had a blast playing the saxophone - and oboe after that! But that might encourage you to register early so you get what you want first.
